Bearded Iris - The majority of garden irises are the bearded iris hybrids. They grow best in full sun and well-drained soil. The rhizomes should be planted at soil level and about 12 inches apart. Hardy in USDA Zones 4 - 9. Plant these in the early Fall. Some of the types of bearded iris available are as follows:
Reblooming Varieties - These Iris have the exceptional quality of blooming in the spring and then again in the fall. Just fertilize and keep your iris watered after the spring bloom. Some of the named varieties are: Coral Chalice(Chalice shaped blooms with white standards and salmon pink falls that gently fade to white. Tangerine beard. 34 inches.), Earl of Essex(A famous rebloomer! Orchid-violet veining on a white background, violet border on falls. Pale orange beard. 35" tall.), Gypsy Caravan(Brilliant coloration combining two distinct shades. Bright golden standards with flaring deep red falls. 36 inches tall.), Immortality(Best known as the reblooming wonder! This vigorous iris produces formally shaped blooms of pure white with a light lemon yellow beard. 29 inches tall.).
Zebra Iris -Iris Pallida Variegata. The white variegation of these iris stands out well against the green background of their broad leaves. Blossoms are fragrant and well shaped. Likes southern exposure and will stand extreme dry periods. 29 inches tall.
Intermediate Bearded Iris - The Intermediates bloom after the dwarfs, growing 20-26" tall. Some of the varieties available are: Red Zinger(Broad form, producing many buds. Brilliant red with a deeper spot. 26 inches tall.) and Royal Knight(Beautiful bold iris of royal violet purple, accented by a bright tangerine beard. 24 inches tall.)
Tall Bearded Iris- These Iris' are outstanding for their unusual color, design and sturdy, vigorous growth habit. They are hardy, disease and drought-resistant plants. Long blooming in the spring and early summer, with handsome green sword-like foliage. They enjoy full or partial sun and well-drained soil. Plant about 15-18 inches apart. Some of the varieties available are: After the Dawn(Violet peach standards with creamy yellow falls.), Batik(Wildly irregular spattered and streaked white markings give each royal purple flower its own distinctive look.), Hidden World(Pale Pink standards with white falls. Bright orange beard.), Joyce Terry(Beautiful bicolor with bright yellow stnadards and beards with white falls edged yellow.), Loop de Loop(White standards and falls edged in deep purple, deep purple beard.), Montevideo(Luscious creamsicle orange standards and falls, orange beard.), Panama Fling(Soft pink standards with violet on midribs, lavender falls blending to a violet edge), Superstition(Such a deep purple, the falls, standards and beard look black.), Tequila Sunrise(Yellow-orange standards and falls of deep violet with a tan border.).
