are: Amaryllis belladonna - The South African belladonna lily is also known as 'Jersey Lily'. This 'true' amaryllis is ideal for the garden. The rosy-pink fragrant flowers bloom on top of 24 inch stalks. Bloom in late August. In areas where temperatures do not drop below 10 degrees F, they can be planted with the top of the bulb about even with soil. In colder areas, plant them deeper to protect from the cold. Plant about 1 foot apart. They like well drained soil. They should be watered regularly during growth period. Plant in full sun. Hardy in USDA zones 8 - 11. Hippeastrum - Hippeastrum's common name is amaryllis. There are many hybrids of this amaryllis available. They are usually grown indoors in pots because of their rapid growth and showy flowers. If planted indoors, they bloom during the winter and early spring season, depending on when planted. If planted outside in warm climates, they bloom in the spring. Each bulb normally produces two stems of 2 - 6 flowers on each stem. They grow from 12 - 36 inches tall and are hardy outside in zones 8 - 11. Hybrids: Dutch Amaryllis - Holland's newest strains produce more flowers per bulb and remain shorter than the older stand-by's. Blooms are over 8 inches across. One standard size bulb should have at least 2 stems with 4-5 blooms on each. Some of the named varieties are Hercules(Dark pink, large flowers), Liberty(Dark red, a little taller than most, but the best in this color range), White Dazzler(the most populare white variety- average height, big flowers), Toronto(White with red stripes, excellent for pots.). Christmas Blooming Amaryllis - These plants generally bloom in 4-6 weeks from being planted in pots indoors. A 6 inch pot is the recommend size for each bulb. These bulbs are available from late September until December. For Christmas blooms, plant approximately from November 15 - 20. for late November blooms, plant approximately October 15 - 20. Some of the varieties are Basuto(Flowers are a deep vivid red.), Cocktail (Bright scarlet with a white center and a green heart.), Desert Dawn(True salmon color. Tall stems.), Merry Christmas(Largest Christmas red blooms on sturdy stems.), Milady(Large perfect pink flowers), Razzle Dazzle(Cherry red blooms with large white stripes.), Summertime(Rose pink with white center veins.), Wedding Dance(Very large white trumpet like flowers), Ragtime(Exotic double flowers of fiery red.), Rozetta(Lovely rose pink with a burst of white at the center). Growing Amaryllis Indoors Select a flowerpot 6 to 8 inches in diameter with a drain hole. Fill it about 1/3 full of good quality potting soil. Place the bulb in the pot, spreading the roots out gently. Fill the pot up the rest of the way with soil leaving the neck of the bulb exposed. Water thoroughly one time, then water sparingly until the bulb starts to grow. Do not over water. Put the pot in a warm sunny place. You will enjoy watching the flower stalk gradually emerge. Each Amaryllis bulb seems to have its own schedule but generally flowers will be open in 6 to 8 weeks. Each stalk may produce 4 to 6 flowers; large bulbs may have 2 to 3 stalks. After flowering, cut off the flower stalks and watch the leaves appear. Water and fertilize the bulb regularly through the summer. STop watering in August; put the bulb in a cool dark place in September and let it go dormant for 8 to 12 weeks. Then bring it into the light, water it, and begin the cycle again. |
