Tigridia pavonia (Tiger Flower, Mexican
Shell Flower) - These Mexican native bulbs have flashy summertime blooms to 6
inches across. The individual flowers last just one day, but since there are a
number of buds, the blooming period lasts for several weeks. Great in
containers, borders, or flower beds. Regular watering during the growing period
is essential and like to be planted in full sun or partial shade in hot summer
areas. Hardy in USDA zones 8 - 10. In colder areas, dig the bulbs in the fall
and store until spring. They grow about 1.5 to 2 feet tall and should be
planted 2 to 4 inches deep and 4 to 8 inches apart.
